Making the brine solution

Refreshing the resin in the water softener

Also known as regeneration.

For this, you will use 28oz box of table salt, dissolve the salt in 1-gallon of warm tap-water to create a brine solution.

Here in Austin Texas where the water is 7gpg (grains-per-gallon),
we would refresh the water after approximately 1,000 gallons of water useage.
That would be well over 50 ten-minute showers before a refesh is needed.

Step-by-step Instructions

Open the Softener Tank

You need access to the tank before beginning regeneration.

  • Remove the top cover of the water softener tank
  • Set the cover aside somewhere clean (or in your pocket)

Prepare the Regeneration Tube

The tube must be ready before inserting it into the tank.

  • Take the regeneration tube
  • Remove the protective cap from the threads
  • Ensure threads are clean and undamaged

Insert the Regeneration Tube

This allows fresh water to enter and push out hardness.

  • Gently screw the tube into the tank opening
  • Tighten hand‑tight only — do not use tools

Open the Drain Line

Opening the drain lets old hard water exit during regeneration.

  • Locate the drain valve
  • Open it fully so hard water can flow out
  • Confirm water is flowing through the softener and exiting the drain

Monitor the Flow

You’ll stop draining once hardness stops flushing out.

  • Watch the drain output
  • When water stops dripping or slows significantly, close the drain valve

Seal the Tank Again

Closing the system allows the brine solution to settle.

  • Put the top cover back on the tank
  • Tighten hand‑tight only

Let the Tank Sit

A short rest allows the brine to finish dissolving hardness.

  • Allow the tank to sit for a couple of minutes before running water

Flush the System

Running water clears out remaining hardness and salt.

  • Turn the water back on
  • Run water through the softener until it flows clear
  • This restores soft water for roughly 30 showers

Confirm Drain Valve Is Closed

Leaving the drain open will cause pressure loss.

  • Ensure the drain valve is OFF before using household water
  • If left open, water will escape and shower pressure will drop
